The E30's naturally aspirated 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine produced 197 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque when new. Paired exclusively with a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, the engine was strong enough to propel the car to 62 mph from a standstill in 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 143 mph. Credit.

The M-car retained the trailing arm set-up in the rear, but scored a beefier front-end.
